Slavic Wedding History

The most important occurrence in a Slavic household is the marriage service, which is often celebrated in spring, summer or fall. It was a time for celebration and satisfaction, as it marked the beginning of the new lifestyle. Men married after successful campaigns, fishing held their ceremonies after a good catch and shepherds tied the knot after the calf period.

Before the wedding ceremony, the wedding is usually given a rushnyk ( a wreath with a cross). Her parents provide her with bread and salt and request for their gift. They also give the couple ektenias ( a ring ) that symbolizes a slavic marriage and a promise of faithfulness and fidelity. The wife wears a veil, which she never takes off, except to go to the bathroom. It was considered a bad omen to take off the veil during the service, and in ancient times it was usual to punish a married who did so.

After the service the brides walk through the streets of the village, with folks throwing seeds of rice ukrainian women, pastries and currencies for happiness and prosperity. They also quit at local shrines and provide memorial. The wedding ceremony is supervised by a master of ceremonies called a” Tamada”. He is a raucous friend who runs the various tournaments.

When the wedding leaves her parents ‘ apartment, she takes with her a blanket that she should maintain, not to give away or enable anyone touch.
